Evaluating your auto coverage

In an effort to reduce their auto insurance premiums, many policyholders elect to raise their “collision” and “comprehensive” deductibles. However, some owners of older vehicles may want to consider dropping their collision and comprehensive coverage entirely. The costs of collision and comprehensive coverage (which repairs or replaces the vehicle  if the policyholder is at fault in an accident, or if the automobile is stolen or vandalized) are primarily dependent on the car’s value. Therefore, the insurance company will pay out only what the car is worth, minus the deductible. With this in mind, many car owners do the math and drop these coverages on older vehicles. Nevertheless, it never pays to skimp on “liability” coverage.
